How to Choose the Right AI Image Model
There's no single best model — there's a best model for what you're trying to make.
New image models arrive constantly, and the "best" one changes every few months. Rather than chase rankings, it helps to understand what each family is good at and how it likes to be prompted. Here's a practical orientation to the models you'll run into most.
Midjourney
Known for a strong, stylized aesthetic straight out of the box — it makes beautiful images with relatively little effort. It expects a comma-separated descriptive phrase plus -- parameters at the end (aspect ratio, version, --no for exclusions). Great for concept art, mood, and striking visuals; less ideal when you need literal, controllable precision.
FLUX (Pro, Flex, Max)
A strong all-rounder that handles natural-language descriptions well and is particularly good with coherent detail and text rendering. Describe the scene in plain sentences rather than tag lists. A good default when you want realism and prompt-faithfulness without a lot of parameter tuning.
Nano Banana (and Pro / 2 / Lite)
Responds best to full natural-language descriptions, similar to DALL·E — no tag lists or parameters needed. Fast and friendly for everyday image generation and quick iterations.
Seedream (4.0, 4.5, 5.0)
Also a natural-language model that rewards clear, descriptive prompts. Useful when you want detailed scenes described conversationally rather than as keyword tags.
DALL·E / GPT Image
Full sentences work best; avoid comma-tag lists and parameters entirely. Excellent at following plain-language instructions and at understanding relationships between objects, which makes it forgiving for beginners.
Stable Diffusion
The most controllable and customizable, especially through ecosystems like ComfyUI. It uses comma-separated tags, supports weighting like (keyword:1.3), and relies on a separate negative prompt. Best when you want deep control, reproducibility, or local generation — at the cost of a steeper learning curve.
Adobe Firefly
Natural-language, similar to DALL·E, with a focus on commercial-safe training data. A sensible pick when licensing and rights matter for your use case.
How to actually choose
- Want beautiful results fast? Start with Midjourney or FLUX.
- Want the model to follow instructions literally? DALL·E / GPT Image or FLUX.
- Want maximum control and reproducibility? Stable Diffusion via ComfyUI.
- Care about commercial licensing? Adobe Firefly.
- Just experimenting? Try Nano Banana or Seedream for quick, natural-language generations.
